When evening came he was there alone with the Father. Jesus was far more tired than the disciples were, and never had anyone to strengthen him except God. Praying there in the gathering dusk, he remembered the bitter dark nights of his temptation in the mountains of Judea. The scene that had just passed with the crowd had been like an echo of the ending of his temptation. Once again the offer of a kingdom had been made to him, the temptation coming upon him with tremendous force, and once again he had refused it. He must remain in the Father’s will.

Hours passed, dew fell, and the night gathered about him. The second evening had come and the first stars shone out in the deep blue sky over the lake of Galilee, with far lights twinkling and trembling from the villages on the other side. Still he prayed, and we dare not contemplate that of his prayer and the mystery of the Godhead. It was for his Father’s ears only.
