The painting shows a Hebrew prayer book and shawl nailed to the cross outside Jerusalem, symbolizing the Savior’s “once for all time” sacrifice to redeem humankind from sin and death. In the person of Jesus, God revealed an entirely new form of worship that completely replaced the Old Covenant. At Pentecost, Christ’s return as the Holy Spirit activated the New Covenant between God and his people, so that all who have faith can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them.

The life of Jesus and his teachings had originally been handed down by word of mouth, and nothing was written down. Early Christians had only Old Testament Scripture. There was no New Testament. As time went on, believers felt it absolutely necessary to save the oral tradition in written form concerning Christ’s life and ministry, his return in the Holy Spirit, the New Covenant, and Kingdom of God.

All of the New Testament canon was written during the last half of the first century A.D. Mark’s Gospel was the first, circa A.D. 55-60; Matthew’s ca. 60-65; Paul’s Letters were between ca. 48-67; Luke’s Gospel and Acts ca. 64-70; and John’s Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation were written ca. 90-96.

Because early Christians and later ones handed down manuscripts to succeeding generations, we have been given the precious privilege of reading for ourselves the actual passages using our favorite Bible translations.

Scripture Finder is an easy reference to the stories in Light of Life.
